Andy Sharrocks is happy, he is happy to be unashamedly derivative. He is happy that he has produced this triple album of original unoriginal music. He is happy that he is not groundbreaking, he is happy that he is not at the cutting edge of new music. He is happy that he is not in the zeitgeist of some new musical movement. He is happy that he is reaching out to an older demographic, the type of person who liked songs like these the first time around, when they were possibly part of an exciting new counter culture. He is happy that he has written and produced thirty six songs in a style which he likes to listen to. He is happy that all the musicians involved feel the same way.
Having moved on from The Smokin’ Jackets, and moved on from London back to the North West, Andy collaborated with Danny Bourassa from Rhythm Conspiracy and Mentalist. Andy managed Rhythm Conspiracy in the mid 90’s, so he knew how strong Danny was on the guitar. And he knew he would bring something fresh to the table.
Andy then got on board Phil Watts, who played with Manchester bands The Out, and The Tunes back in the day, and was the drummer on Gordon Is A Moron by Jilted John, and toured the world with the likes of Gloria Gaynor. These two guys have known each since childhood, but never managed to be in the same band, until now, even though Phil played on some tracks on Andy’s first solo album, Walking In Familiar Footsteps.
And finally Phil Cawsey came on board by a recommendation from Phil Watts. A drummer recommending a bass player, means, a great bass player. Phil has lived a lifetime playing bass in blues and folk bands, and together with Phil Watts created a powerful rhythm unit.
Andy is aware that some songs may borrow a swagger from The Stones, a pinch from Tom Waits, a sprinkling from Steve Earle, some crumbs from Bob Dylan, even some fairy dust from artists he possibly doesn’t even know about, as Andy has been a sponge for great music for the last sixty years, and this is the product of the sponge being wrung dry.
Somebody may hear another artist in the songs. But not everybody will hear the same artist in the same song. And….. everybody who likes the artists they hear should like this 36 part electric and part acoustic UK Americana extravaganza called Country Rock n Roll n Durty Blues.
It sounds like it says in the Title.
